Scaling and Polishing

Scaling and polishing is a routine dental procedure that involves professionally cleaning your teeth to remove plaque, tartar (calculus), and surface stains. It is one of the most important preventive treatments to help maintain healthy gums, fresh breath, and a clean smile. Even with regular brushing and flossing, plaque can harden into tartar over time—especially in hard-to-reach areas. Scaling removes these deposits, and polishing smooths the tooth surfaces to make it harder for new plaque to form.

Why Is It Important?

Scaling and polishing not only improve the appearance of your teeth but also play a vital role in preventing gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath. Left untreated, tartar buildup can lead to gingivitis (early-stage gum disease) and more serious periodontal issues.

Benefits of Scaling & Polishing:

  • Removes plaque and tartar: Eliminates buildup that can't be removed by brushing alone.
  • Prevents gum disease: Helps avoid bleeding gums, gum recession, and tooth loss.
  • Freshens breath: Reduces bacteria that cause bad breath (halitosis).
  • Polishes teeth: Removes surface stains for a cleaner, brighter smile.
  • Promotes overall health: Gum health is closely linked to systemic health conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

What to Expect During the Procedure

  1. Examination: Your dentist or hygienist will check your gums and teeth for signs of buildup or inflammation.
  2. Scaling: Special ultrasonic or manual tools are used to gently remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline.
  3. Polishing: A polishing paste is applied to buff the surfaces of your teeth and remove minor stains.
  4. Fluoride Treatment (Optional): A fluoride gel may be applied to help strengthen enamel and reduce sensitivity.

Post-Treatment Instructions: Scaling & Polishing

1. Sensitivity

  • Mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods is normal for 24–72 hours.
  • Use toothpaste for sensitive teeth (e.g., Sensodyne).
  • Avoid acidic or spicy foods temporarily if discomfort occurs.

2. Bleeding Gums

  • Slight bleeding may occur during brushing or flossing for a few days.
  • Continue brushing and flossing gently but thoroughly.

3. Oral Hygiene

  • Brush twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Floss once daily to prevent plaque buildup.
  • Use an antimicrobial mouthwash if recommended by your dentist.

4. Diet

  • Avoid very hot or cold foods and beverages for the first 24 hours.
  • Refrain from smoking or drinking alcohol for 24 hours.

5. Tartar & Stain Removal

  • Teeth may appear whiter due to removal of surface stains and tartar.
  • Scaling does not whiten teeth like bleaching treatments.
  • Maintain regular cleanings every 6 months.

6. Discomfort or Pain

  • Soreness should subside within 1–3 days.
  • Contact your dentist if discomfort persists or worsens.

7. Follow-Up

  • Book your next professional cleaning in 6 months or as advised.

How Often Should You Get Scaling & Polishing?

For most people, scaling and polishing should be done every 6 months as part of a regular dental check-up. However, if you are prone to gum disease, smoke, wear braces, or have health conditions like diabetes, you may need more frequent cleanings (every 3–4 months).

Is It Painful?

Scaling and polishing is usually painless and well-tolerated. Some people may experience mild sensitivity during or after the procedure, especially if there's a lot of buildup or gum inflammation. If needed, we can apply a local anesthetic or numbing gel to make the experience more comfortable.
