Gum Disease Problems

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a chronic infection of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. It begins with gingivitis (mild inflammation and bleeding of the gums) and can progress to periodontitis if left untreated—leading to gum recession, bone loss, loose teeth, and even tooth loss.

Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults, but the good news is that it's preventable and treatable, especially when detected early.

Signs & Symptoms of Gum Disease

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Bleeding while brushing or flossing
  • Persistent bad breath or bad taste in the mouth
  • Receding gums or teeth that look longer
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Formation of deep pockets between teeth and gums
  • Pain or discomfort when chewing

Causes of Gum Disease

Gum disease is most often caused by the buildup of plaque—a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. When not removed by regular brushing and flossing, plaque hardens into tartar, which leads to gum inflammation and infection.

Other risk factors include:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Smoking or tobacco use
  • Diabetes and other systemic conditions
  • Hormonal changes (e.g., pregnancy, menopause)
  • Genetics
  • Stress and poor nutrition

Treatment for Gum Disease

The type of treatment depends on the severity of the condition. Our goal is to remove plaque and tartar, reduce inflammation, and stop the disease from progressing.

  • Scaling & Root Planing: A deep cleaning that removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline and smooths root surfaces to help gums reattach to the teeth.
  • Antibacterial Therapy: Medication or mouth rinses may be prescribed to control infection.
  • Periodontal Maintenance: More frequent cleanings (every 3–4 months) to keep gum disease under control.
  • Surgical Treatment: In advanced cases, procedures like flap surgery or bone grafting may be needed to restore lost tissue and bone.

Why Treat Gum Disease Early?

Early treatment of gum disease is critical. Not only does it help prevent tooth loss, but it also protects your overall health. Studies have linked periodontal disease to systemic conditions such as:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Respiratory infections

How to Prevent Gum Disease

  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss at least once a day
  • Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings
  • Quit smoking and avoid tobacco products
  • Eat a balanced, healthy diet
  • Manage health conditions like diabetes effectively
